The San Juan Skyway is a 236 mile loop in southwest Colorado connecting Durango, Telluride, Silverton, Ouray, and other mountain communities. It includes sections of US and state highways through varied elevation zones. The route is one of Colorado's signature long scenic loops.

Loop structure

Travelers can start in several towns, with Durango often used as a base because of services and lodging. The loop links historic mining communities, mountain passes, and broad valley segments.

Part of the route includes the Million Dollar Highway section on US 550, adding steeper and more technical mountain driving to the itinerary.

Trip strategy

Because the loop is long and includes multiple high-elevation sections, weather and daylight planning matter across seasons. Segmenting the drive by town clusters helps avoid fatigue.

A balanced plan usually combines scenic pullouts with town stops for meals and overnight breaks.
